The museum has held temporary exhibitions organised according to artistic movements such as: Surrealism, Cobra art group, Abstractionism, Abstract American Expressionism, Minimal Art, Colour Field Painting, Kinetic and Op Art, Pop Art, Photography and the 1990’s.The Berardo Collection has also held exhibitions devoted to the works of single artists. Such was the case with Michael Craig Martin’s “Living”, Susan Solano’s “Sintra-Granada” sculptures and Carlos Nogueira’s “Nem sombra nem vento” (“Neither shade nor wind”). In the year 2000, the Sintra Museum organised the exhibition “Durante o Fim” ("At the End”) by the sculptor Rui Chafes, which was not only held at the museum but also at the Pena Palace and the Pena Park.

The largest exhibition was "Autobiografia"("Autobiography") by Júlio Pomar which consisted of an anthology spanning the painter's entire work since the beginning of his career. Erich Kahn’s collection was also revisited in Sintra, marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps in an historic exhibition entitled, “Forgotten Generation: Erich Kahn, Jew, Survivor, German Expressionist”. "Fernando Lemos and Surrealism” was another great exhibition which moved to Madeira’s Calheta Arts Centre after being shown in Sintra.

With the aim of giving greater exposure to young artists, the museum set aside an area called the "New Gallery" which has showcased works by Adriana Molder, Catarina Leitão, Joana Vasconcelos, Sara Maia, João Pedro Vale and Miguel Navas.

Organised around particular themes, the exhibitions worthy of mention are, "Sedução, Cinema e Pintura" ("Seduction, Cinema and Painting") and "Art Deco" which included Berardo’s entire Art Deco collection and was held in collaboration with the Musée des Années 30 and the Museu do Traje (Costume Museum).
