Wine Cellars and Colares Wine

Colares Regional Wine Cellars

3DColares wine boasts an incomparable history from the birth of the nation through the writings of various figures such as Eça de Queiroz and Lord Byron. Vines which are planted in sandy soils and maritime climates must be handled with great care and must be cultivated in small-scale vineyards which are worked manually. As well as being produced under very special microclimatic conditions, these vines come from native grape varieties such as Ramisco (red) and Malvasia de Colares (white) and are highly appreciated by some of the most respected names in international oenology. As a result of the combination of human and viticulturist factors, each bottle constitutes a very special heritage and is a veritable collector's item.

In 2008 the region commemorated 100 years since it became a specified wine region.

The Colares Regional Wine Cellars were founded in 1931 and currently produce over 50% of the region’s wines and are supplied by 90% of its producers. This cooperative has played a hugely important social role in the region’s agricultural sector for 75 years now. It produces wines from the Colares Protected Designation of Origin, regional Extremadura wines and table wines suited for any occasion.

The original building which is still in use looks grand from the outside and is striking inside due to its sheer size. The main building houses a vast number of huge vats where the cellars’ wines are left to mature.

If you would like a guided tour with some wine tasting or an organised event, be it a meeting, an evening meal or a concert in the Colares Wine Cellars, please contact ‘Empresa Coisas do Vinho’ based in the cellars.
