Casal Santa Maria

The origin of this Estate goes as far back as the beginning of the 18thcentury. The main house was built in 1720 and remarkably survived the 1755 earthquake because of the Serra de Sintra (hill) underground granite structure.

Wine production was interrupted in 1903, but 100 years later, Mr.Baron Bruemmer after his 97th anniversary brought “the most western vineyards in Europe” back to life and modernized “the boutique” winery.

Casal St Maria stands between the Atlantic Ocean and Serra de Sintra and it’s influenced by a maritime climate with cool nights, misty mornings and fresh afternoon maritime breezes. Soils are clay loam with granite outcroppings and rich in organic-matter as result of the famous Arab-Horse-Breeding which existed here in the 70’s and 80’s.

Out from this terroir we grow fine wines which call to mind the ocean, very fragrant, fresh and balanced, with strong savoury sea notes. The wines are characterized by their aging-potential, their character and complexity.
